The owners of this classic Romantic Revival house in the Spanish style wanted a landscape that evokes memories of an Italian villa. The design concept bridges these Mediterranean cultures with romantic curved paths, warm toned stone, statuary and regionally appropriate plantings. Because there is little back yard and the homeowners also wanted a long hardscape for bicycles and skateboards, the play lawn is sited in the front of the home. A custom wrought iron gate encloses the driveway, while a low wood door frames the entry walk. Cutouts in the stucco wall feature potted flowers, with lemons and olives in pots bracketing doorways elsewhere. To increase the yard space, the driveway is kept fairly narrow, yet a circular landing allows passengers to disembark comfortably. A small fountain outside the living room provides a pleasing focal point through the large picture window; and vertical columnar juniper trees punctuate the landscape and accentuate the home's height and style. This project currently is in construction. |
